The Art of Petticoat Punishment

by Carole Jean

Part 34 - French and German Publishers between the Wars

NEW!!!!

I have finally finished translating Der Gestiefelte Eros - Confession of a transvestite shoe fetishist

" Der gestiefelte Eros " appeared as the first volume of the collection "Literary documents of the sexual life styles" It was printed in 1932 in a very limited edition only for subscribers. It is a novel of shoe fetishism, female domination and forced transvestism. The book contained about 62,000 words and included 6 original drawings. My translation and the drawings are now available as my download 137.

I have been working on translating this book for several years. It was my white whale. The translation was remarkably difficult because my German is atrocious and because The German orthography reform of 1996 made translation programs such as Google Translate nearly useless. The 1932 text included many words that included letters that had been eliminated from the new alphabet, vintage spelling and idioms, and combined words that are now separated. I hope that you will enjoy it - now I can move on to other projects.

Paris in the early part of the twentieth century housed several pioneer publishers of fetish literature. Three of these were, The Select Bibliothèque, Jean Fort’s ‘Orties Blanches’ and the ‘Librairie Artistique et Editions Parisiennes Reunies’ of Paul Brenet.

Occasionally these publishers would print a story on the topic of Petticoat Punishment. Some of these, particularly those from The Select Bibliothèque, are classics of the genre.

These were always illustrated with suburb period drawings, and I have obtained many of these stories in the original French, scanned the art and translated the captions (with the help of my friend Peter Farrer).

ÉDUCATION ANGLAISE, 1908 by Édition Parisienne, Paris France
By Lord Kidrodstock
A pseudonym of an author of flagellation-works including this and ‘Stays and Gloves’

This is a very early and unusual text featuring forced cross dressing and flagellation. Boys and girls in this English boarding school are dressed alike in girl’s clothes. They receive deportment and figure training by means of the discipline of tight corsets, narrow high-heeled boots, clinging kid gloves, combinations, etc. reinforced by frequent application of the whip or the birch.

The 1908 edition is illustrated with ten magnificent full page drawings by Del Giglio

*****

The second edition was published in 1931 by Librairie Artistique et Édition Parisienne, with four culs-de-lampee (small decorative tail pieces at the end of each chapter), ten vignettes (smaller drawings at the beginnings of the chapters), and nine magnificent full-page copperplate engravings by Gaston Smith (aka Topfer) one of which is in color. These full page drawings were not bound into the book but were inserted and are often found separately.

I have translated this book into English and inserted all 33 illustrations from the two editions. It is available to order and is highly recommended.

FRED

The True History of a Boy Raised as a Girl

By Don Brennus Alera

THIS BOOK IS NOW AVAILABLE ON KINDLE - FIND IT AND OTHER TITLES BY SEARCHING FOR 'CAROLE JEAN'

FRED is a classic story of the Petticoat Punishment and transformation of a teenage boy.

“Here is your room,” said the sous-maitresse finally while guiding him into a nicely-decorated little room in which Fred noticed immediately a mirrored armoire, a dressing-table adorned with numerous bottles and other knickknacks, little lace doilies under the lamps, and pastel ribbons tied into bows attached to the frames of the mirrors.

It seemed to him he had entered a young girl’s room, and this impression was reinforced when he saw a dress, petticoats, and delicate lingerie displayed here and there on the chairs. At first he thought Frau Anna had made a mistake, knowing that a male student would surely leave this room the moment they gave it to him.

The sharp voice of the sous-maitresse disabused him of this notion.

“Here are the clothes you are going to wear, Monsieur Frédéric. Remove yours and put them on.”

“I have to dress as a girl?” asked the young boy with a sudden uneasiness that made his voice crack.

“I will help you. It isn’t difficult; you’ll learn how quickly.”

“As a girl! . . . !” repeated the child in a gloomy tone, his face lowered to the floor, so absorbed that he wasn’t paying attention to the her words.

In a louder voice she told him again, crossing her arms, “Let’s go, enough of the dramatics! You are well aware that one wears a uniform at boarding school; well then, here the uniform for boys is the costume of a girl. Doesn’t that make sense? Now obey and be quick about it!”

Frédéric again raised an objection, “But I don’t want to be dressed as a girl all day!”

“Oh, but yes, all day and every day!”

“I don’t want to! I --“

“What are you talking about?” snapped Anna severely. “Mistress has already told you all about it. You know very well that here you are going to be raised with girls and as a girl.”

Frédéric’s face reddened terribly; a stifled sob lifted his chest, and he hiccupped out a few choked words, “Oh! . . . No! . . . Not that . . . I am a boy . . . and I don’t want to . . . wear --”

“I will dress you by force, if you don’t want to obey me.”

Peter Farrer notes:

A point of interest is that from beginning to end FRED is referred to as "he" by the narrator. This keeps reminding the reader that it is a male who is being transformed into a girl and then a woman, otherwise with the excessive feminization shown in the illustrations we might lose sight of this.

FREDERIQUE

The True History of a Teenager Changed into a Girl

By Don Brennus Alera

Illustrated by ‘Tack’

THIS BOOK IS NOW AVAILABLE ON KINDLE - FIND IT AND OTHER TITLES BY SEARCHING FOR 'CAROLE JEAN

This is the second volume of FRED, a classic story of the Petticoat Punishment and transformation of a teenage boy.

Purely by accident, she had witnessed Fred, dressed for the first time as a girl, being punished for something or another, and this had aroused her secret, darker side; everything seemed crystal clear and the scene had been a revelation to her. It had suddenly dawned on her that she had found a way of achieving her dream; her tantalized mind and her vivid imagination had conjured up the outline of a plan which was disappointed by Fred's admission to Sainte-Brigitte.

But now, it was as if no time had elapsed; Fred was in her power, at her mercy; he had no other relatives to whom he could turn; as it was, he already belonged to her and it would not be long before he became her creature. She had him in the palm of her hand. She had laid the foundations of a daring enterprise nurtured over a long period of time and which she undertook with the resolution to carry it through to the end. She saw nothing quixotic about her concept whose outcome would be the transformation of this young boy into a female slave.

Her plan was two-fold: Fred had to be made effeminate and enslaved. Feminizing him was Léontine’s first priority. It was the more urgent since the transformation had to be implemented before his age made it more difficult to install the artificial tastes to develop them and to make them second nature; the slavery would follow, imperceptible, and concomitant to taking up new habits, so that one day, it would be virtually achieved and little would be needed to make it complete, absolute and final. Only then would Fred be a thing of the past, and superseded by Frédérique; he would no longer be a boisterous boy, but a composed young lady; the docile and deferential nephew would become a submissive slave complete with the clothes, bearing, gestures, language, tastes, thoughts and even the soul of a girl.

FRIDA

The True Story of a Young Man Becoming a Girl

This is the third volume of FRED, a classic story of the Petticoat Punishment and transformation of a teenage boy.

This was the first time he was involved in a group of this nature, so he felt a peculiar confusion. All in all he had only been living either surrounded by la baronne de Saint-Genest or la Comtesse d’Esseg; he had hardly approached any other woman except his two mistresses. He found it very natural to serve, even kneel before Léontine or Myrtile whose slave he regarded himself. But being displayed to all of this assembly, having to teeter between of all of these women who examined him frankly or stealthy, who sent him their hair perfumes or their armpits odor by flapping their fans, and to serve all them, one after another, as he had served his two mistresses, this new thing filled him with a kind of confusion he couldn’t define. Besides he didn’t try to analyze it, as he was intoxicated by all that surrounded him, his mind was getting lost in the idea that he had become a woman, as all those who were there considered him to be one.

His feminization, however much it had progressed, wasn’t complete enough. It didn’t prevent him from realizing that it was thanks to a trick that he could deceive all these people. And everybody there had been well fooled; there was however a woman who considered him with a fixed gaze; it was kind of some sexual instinct that told her that she was fooling herself, but she didn’t understand and kept on cluck-clucking with her neighbor and receiving the attentiveness of some gallant standing next to her.

Peter Farrer notes:

It is amusing that the illustrations for FRIDA onwards are contemporary to the date of publication, so continuity is lost with what started as a pre-first-world-war story.

FRIDOLINE

The True Story of a Young Man Becoming an Actress

By Don Brennus Alera

cover art it by 'Esbey' and the interior illustrations are by 'Mati.'

This is the fourth volume of FRED, a classic story of the Petticoat Punishment and transformation of a teenage boy.

The numerous mirrors reflected a picture of him that harmonized with this setting, with the Extreme meticulousness of the laces, the radiance of the crystals and the perfumes of the flowers. For a moment he forgot his surroundings and caught himself reflected in a swing mirror leaning toward him, he took a few moments to smile at his own reflection, to correct a fold of his dress, to twist an uncurled buckle, to lengthen the arm before him to admire the reflections of an opal that changed with every movement of his finger.

“It is very true,” he said in an almost high voice, “I have become a woman . . .”

He went on, running his hand over the contour of his hips and breasts, “A lot of girls would envy these hips and this chest.”

He pinched his dress between two fingers, lifted the hem in order to display the arch of his foot, turned it to make the curve of his calf appear in the mirror.

“Woman's legs!” he said. “I am obliged to agree that with these high ankle boot and these excessively high heels I have truly have extremely feminine legs.”

He thought about his arms; he raised them above his head, and crossed his hands behind his neck to appreciate the shape of his elbow.

“It had changed shape,” he thought; “the tight long gloves that I have worn so long molded them, rounded the bulges and thinned the wrist.”

Then he brought his face close to the mirror to examine it more carefully, in detail and in all conscience. He noted the fine skin, woman's skin that depilation had given to him, the long abundant and silken hair, embellish by skilful curls and by the harmonious twist of the hair bun.

“That is not to say,” He thought again, “That I can be seen closely, and everybody would be deceived.”

LINA FRIDO

The True Story of a Young Man Becoming a Naked Singer

By Don Brennus Alera

Illustrated by ‘Esbey.’

This is the fifth and final volume of FRED, a classic story of the Petticoat Punishment and transformation of a teenage boy.

The teenager knew by experience that la comtesse's projects and those of the Director were always achieved, that was why he was overtaken by a sudden anxiety. He understood that he had been mistaken when he believed he was finished with the humiliations which these two women had planned for him; their current conversation gave him new and sad perspectives; all his past shames would be nothing in comparison with those that would be inflicted on him in the future.

He felt deeply offended and horribly worried. He thought of the exhibitions which he was to perform as the most insulting curiosities!

Although he had wanted to avoid thinking about it, he could not stop himself from imagining in advance the torment to which he was going to be submitted when it would be necessary to display himself stark naked to the most mischievous curiosities and to allow them to know the secret of his metamorphosis and his submission to the capricious and haughty creatures who, not satisfied to have taken his liberty, had taken his gender and had made it impossible for him to live any life other than the one chosen, settled and organized by them!

And he stood there, immobile and totally naked in the middle of this curious circle, having lost the satisfied feeling that he had when they were complimenting him; he felt subsided, prostrate and ashamed. His shoulders slumped; his chin fell to his chest; he was the living picture of shame and despair.

RECITS PIQUANTS, CHAUDES ADVENTURES

(Scenes de Feminisme)

SAUCY TALES, WARM ADVENTURES

(Scenes of Feminine Domination)

By G. Topfer

Illustrated by G. Topfer

Peter Farrer contributes this information:

This is the second edition with illustrations by G. Topfer, the first was 1914, which is only available in Paris . BL and Kinsey have this.

This is a classic French compilation of various episodes or scenes of whipping. The punishers are all women, the victims boys and girls, young men and women.

There is no petticoat punishment as such, but in several cases, not all, the male victims find themselves in female clothing. In one case a young man is in fancy dress. in another a boy is dressed as a girl to prevent him leaving the house, he is then whipped by a little girl and most interesting of all, a boy of 14 has tried on his aunt's clothes, and. when caught, is whipped in them.

Afterwards the aunt tells him: "I prefer undressing girls for punishment as I have done with you today. On the other hand," she added, “nothing is more humiliating for a boy than to he whipped when dressed as a girl, which adds to the effect of the punishment. Were you not troubled when I lifted your skirts, then agonized when I opened your drawers, and quivering when I exposed your behind?" (pp. 87-8)

Those comments, however, imply that the aunt is familiar with the practice of putting boys into girls' clothes to receive punishment.

Illustrations and a full translation of 'Paulette's Film' from:

Collection des Orties Blanches, 1922

PAULETTE BETRAYED

by Jacques d'Icy

Illustrated by Louis Malteste

Peter Farrer gave me the following information about this book:

Paulette Trahie (Paulette Betrayed) by Jacques d'Icy was published in Paris by Jean Fort, Collection des Orties Blanches in 1922 (On page 263, he signs off on August 1st, but he doesn't give the year.)

Jacques d'Icy is the pseudonym of the artist Louis Malteste, who I believe died in 1928, but I am not certain of that. After what he said were twenty years of research, in 1912 he started publishing collections of spanking and whipping episodes and stories, from published records, newspapers, private letters and interviews. His first two books were entitled Qui aime Bien .... chatie bien (Who loves well, beats well). Later books concentrate on women whipping women and girls, with alleged true personal revelations by the women themselves, and there is much lesbianism among the flagellant ladies. All the books , except the first two, were illustrated and signed by Malteste. In addition the publishers include at the end of these later books collections of readers' letters who contribute their experiences of corporal punishment.

Throughout the books there are various accounts of boys or young men being whipped by women, often in front of girls, but no cross dressing, I believe, except in the present work, as I shall explain.

A second edition was published in 1930, and a third in 1978 (by Dominique Leroy). Also in 1930 Jean Fort published an English translation of Parts II and III, together with other stories, under the title Paulette 's Film and other stories, translated by Beatty M. Ducane. Then in 1975 Janus Publications of London published their translation, Paulette Betrayed. This latter is unsatisfactory, because it is inaccurate and has been slightly reduced in size, simply by omitting various words and phrases as it goes along.

You will note that on pages 104 and 117 of (1) Paulette has the idea of dressing Paul as a girl and spanking him before her friends, but she never gets to do this.

Part III of Paulette Trahie is given the title "Paulette's Film" because Paulette is concerned with making a film. The reason for the film is given on page 105 of (2). "It's a story that happened in his family and as far as I gathered it concerns him and he wants to see it on the screen."

The story is about a young aristocrat, who is trained by female relatives to be effeminate and at the age of 20 is fully dressed as a woman., thus losing the inheritance of his great aunt, who requires him to be a true man at 20. A little earlier Madame Honore says "the story is written in English by a well known author."

You will recognize the plot as that of Miss Hauts-Talons, but the date of that is 1929. Here we have an earlier version, of 1922, so either Bernard Vallonnes copied Jacques d'Icy or both copied an earlier version still. Is this where Celia Farley and Sir O.T. come in? In any case I think this is further evidence to be considered about the origins of the story of Miss Hauts-Talons.
